a life time of self-respect and healthy living. Pictured at right are the 2009 Girls on the Run Community Service Group Purpose Girls on the Run was organized to provide programs to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and health living. Program Premise Girls on the Run is an innovative health education and wellness program that combines training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event with life-changing, self esteem enhancing lessons that encourage healthy habits and an active lifestyle in 8 – 12 year old girls. Through the program, girls will learn lessons about goal setting and achievement, perseverance, motivation, overcoming obstacles, and inspiration. Program Objective The objective of Girls on the Run is to reduce the potential display of at-risk activities among its participants. The goal is fewer adolescent pregnancies and eating disorders, less depression and suicide attempts, as well as fewer substance/alcohol abuse problems and confrontations with the juvenile justice system. Program Structure Girls on the Run program will be offered at Coldwater school locations with other area schools to be added in the near future if funding is available. The curriculum is structured in a twelve - week program, meeting two afternoons a week. During each session, a new concept is introduced and discussed and they participate in an activity that engages the topic with physical exercise. The program culminates with a 3.1 celebration run, inviting family and friends to participate with the girls. Weekly Curriculum Topics Some samples of the topics covered include: Healthy choices - peer pressure/drugs/alcohol Community and community service responsibilities Gossiping Bullying Healthy diet Standing up for yourself Being a girl of your word Marketing & Advertising - the messages they are sendingBoard of Directors Karen Buys, President Skip Davis, Vice President Chris Hill-Melton, Secretary Cheryl Covell Nick Grabowski Rosie Rial Bob Mullally Ed Dobson Val Rossman Nikki Paarlberg Carol Hass, Council Director Julie Stratos, CHC Foundation Liaison 2010 Calendar January 29, 2010- Application Deadline February 1, 2010- Participants selected February 18, 2010- Shoe fitting Jefferson School 4:15-6:00pm March 2, 2010- Program begins May 29, 2010- 5K Celebration Run Program Funding Donations to the program can be made through the CHC Foundation, designated to Girls on the Run. All donors are listed in CHC’s quarterly community newsletter, the HealthLine. The Community Health Center Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and as such, donations to the Foundation are tax deductible. Background Girls on the Run was founded in 1996 by four-time Ironman Triathlete Molly Barker, and has had over 30,000 participants since it began, with a 300% growth rate per year. Through the program, girls will learn lessons about goal setting and achievement, perseverance, motivation, overcoming obstacles, and inspiration. Girls on the Run International (GOTRI) is the parent organization of more than 120 Girls on the Run councils across the United States and Canada. GOTRI establishes, trains, and supports a network of community-level councils with local volunteers. The largest Girls on the Run program in the nation is in Kalamazoo with 1,700 participants in third through fifth grades in 2006. Kalamazoo has 54 sites, 236 coaches, and 116 teams. A sample of 806 greater Kalamazoo participants indicated that 95% were able to list at least three things that they had learned in Girls on the Run that they can do to live a healthy life. Participation in GOTR positively strengthened girls’ attitudes toward physical activity as well as their perceptions of their capability to engage in physical activity. Body anxiety was lessened, as measured in the survey, by participation in the program.
