Diabetes is widely recognized as one of the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S. Diabetes is a condition affecting the way a person's body produces glucose (the main source of fuel for the body) and insulin(a hormone used to help cells absorb the glucose). People with diabetes either produce little or no insulin, or the body cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced. As a result, glucose builds up in the blood, overflows into the urine, and passes out of the body. The body loses its main source of fuel even though the blood contains large amounts of glucose.
