History of Coldwater Coldwater was first settled in 1830 by Allen Tibbits and Joseph Hanchett. It officially received its name in 1833, and was named for the river running through it. Since its incorporation as a city in 1861, Coldwater has been growing and will continue to be a significant contributor to Michigan. Coldwater Today Coldwater is the county seat of Branch County, and is located in Southwest Michigan. It is a growing community with citizens committed to family, education, and local government. This city celebrates its past and present, especially the preservation of some of the finest turn-of-the-century architecture anywhere in the country.
